2009 NYQP happens!

For the first time since the early- to mid-1980’s, there was again a New York State QSO Party. Thanks to the initiative of two key players – Paul K2DB/K2NNY and Rick W1TY – and the support of the Rochester DX Association (RDXA) and the Western New York DX Association (WNYDXA), New York State was again in the QSO Party arena.

See a sample NYQP plaque!

So how’d it go? In the 210 submitted logs, 111 NY, 99 US/Canada/DX, there were 3465 different call signs and a total of 21,370 QSOs! There were logs from 40 NY counties, 35 states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 5 DX countries. Between them all, every NY county was in one log or another! (See how many from each further down.) Unfortunately, there was no Sweep (62) on this initial outing – the closest NY entry is W2UJ (ALB county, 50) and out-of-state is W0BH (KS, 47).

Interestingly, out of the 120 total possible Class/Power/Mode combinations for in- and out-of-state, there were only 32 combinations actually entered:

Not surprisingly, Single-Op far surpassed all others (89.5%) with Low Power reigning at 2/3rds of the SO stations. We were hoping for more NY mobiles, and we are hearing that modified operating times might facilitate that. (That and other improvements are being considered for the 2010 running.)

CLUBS

61% (129 of 210) of entrants were proud enough of their clubs (55 of them) to include them in the log. So it seemed appropriate to recognize that loyalty with commendations for those clubs that had 3 or more entrants. (Hmmm, perhaps some club competition should be considered for next year.)
