New York QSO Party 2009 Soapbox
We searched 3830, all the logs, and even your e-mail submittals for your comments about the NYQP.
So, here YOU are! (in random order).
We also requested and received some more extensive write-ups, which we put on a separate page entitled The Rest of the Story.
WF2S (ny) -- This was my first shot at computer assisted contesting . Patience, practice and perseverance are needed as well as a softer seat cushion!!
KD2MU (ny) -- First time operating from the cabin; had a great time and learned alot! Can't wait till nexr year. Thanks RDXA.
N2FF (ny) -- Fun, but I hoped to make many more RTTY QSOs but the JARTS was on at the same time. I'll be back next year for a Hoot!
K4BAI (ga) -- FT1000MP, Alpha 78, 1 KW, TH6DXX, dipole, inverted vee. Limited time. Sounded like a very good revival of the NY QSO Party. Congratulations! 73, John
K5LH (tx) -- Casual effort in tandem with other contests going on simultaneously. Special thanks to mobiles WJ20, W2LC and W2PV. Rig: Omni V, wire dipoles, Aetherlog for Mac. 73, Chris
AD1C (co) -- Only new county was Yates (thanks Paul, WB2ABD). Where were Montgomery and Putnam? Thanks to all the mobiles and fixed stations for getting on the air! 73 – Jim
W5ESE (tx) -- Made a few NY QSO Party contacts while participating in the QRP ARCI Fall QSO Party. Glad to see a QSO Party for all of New York State. Hope it will persist beyond the 'Year of the State QSO Party'.
W2GSB (ny) -- The W2GSB (Great South Bay ARC) crew was W2JGH K2IZ KC2TZY W2HCB KC2OYH KC2VLV N2MIG. Operations were from the Town of Babylon EOC- 3 radios and all ops taking turns. Our conditions were not the best but we gave it a try. We now have a crew of about 12 contesters; we have created a monster in KC2TZY. He is going to be a great operator GREAT TIME HAD BY ALL WE HAD A BLAST. SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.
W2TZ (ny) -- Thanks NYQP -- it was nice being the station everyone else was looking for! Even then, propagation made it a challenge once night came. Regardless, it was really nice to have New York state back on the QSO Party map -- many thanks to the organizers.
KN4Y (fl) -- The CW was steady at a slow pace, operators staying close to the fireplace. Did not hear many mobiles.
W2BC (ny) -- Operated mobile "at rest" from Fern Park, Inlet, NY. Too lazy to string any dipoles. Maybe next year.
NO5W (tx) -- Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time to spend in the NYQP but when I was there I didn't have much trouble finding stations to work and most of the signals were very good. Congratulations to the RDXA for a successful re-incarnation of the NYQP. Hopefully next year I'll be able to spend more time in the NYQP. 73/Chuck
AK2X/M (ny) -- Everything went well for the first 3 counties, after a brief "Ham Dinner" at my Sisters, propagation seemed gone. From 7pm local to 10pm local we made 4 Qs. Turns out we broke the sheild on the coax connecting the radio to the tuner. OOOps.
K6MM (ca) -- Good conditions on 20M. Well organized, but I didn't have much time for this one. Glad to hear NY state on the air. 73, John
K9NW (in) -- Big signals from the NY gang! Thanks for the QSOs! 73, Mike
VE3KZ (on) -- Congratulations K2DB and the other organizers! That ball game sure put dent in evening activity. Looking forward to a second try at the NYQP. Maybe it'll be the Blue Jays next year! 73 Bob
W6XR/2 (ny) -- Many thanks to all worked, especially W2PV who mobiled from needed county to needed county. Having 100's of hours building and operating at the previous W2PV, it was very nostalgic to work Jim's call so many times. Hats off to all the mobiles. The bands were sub par and my first hour was terrible on 20 because I forgot and was listening inadvertently on the low band Pennant array which probably has at least 40 db. of attenuation on signals above forty. All in all a good warm up for all the upcoming contest activity. 73, Natan
N3TG -- A 14-day deadline during a heavy contest season is, I believe, unreasonable. 30 days after the contest should be acceptable. Most other state QPs follow this rule, and so should NY.
KS2G (ny) -- Having never operated in any other state QSO parties, I don't have a feel for how good the level of participation was. I was expecting to hear more NY stations calling CQ as I tuned the bands, but don't know whether there were actually fewer than I expected, or just wasn't hearing enough of those that were on because of band conditions. On the other hand, I got lots of out-of-state responses when I was running, so I surmise that there was significant interest around the country. Great fun!!
K2QMF (ny) -- Nice to have the NYQP back!!! Looking forward to next year...
W1NN (oh) -- Where I live in Ohio it is not so far to the NY border and I was seriously thinking about going to NY to do a mobile effort in this event, but the contest hours really turned me off. Even if I end up at the NY/PA border at the end of the contest (2 AM local), it would be about 5 AM by the time I get home, which is just too late for me. Noon to midnight (EDST)would make a lot more sense. Personally, I would prefer 10 AM to 10 PM - much easier on the body, more family friendly and attractive to Europeans. 73, Hal
NS1Z (md) -- Lots of fun....also lots of distractions too: NY Yankees game, Colorado Avalanche Game & DX (K4M)...thanks to all! Jim
W2LHL (nj) -- Thanks to all who dug me out of the noise level.I was pleasantly surprised. Distance to NY = 15 to 300 miles. Need a better antenna setup for close-by contacts. 100w ground wave just doesn't make it. I'll be back.
KA2D (ny) -- Lots of distractions this weekend....Yeah Yankees 2-0. I was planning to do and all rtty/psk, but with JATRS and WAG and others it was tough going... stayed mostly on 80 and some 40. CU -Tom
N2WN (tn) -- Thanks to WJ2O/m (5) and WB2ABD/m (3) for hitting the road. I didn't hear any other mobiles, but not sure I had the best path to NY either. Did manage two RTTY QSOs on 80, one good for a new multiplier. 20 was not good at all, heard plenty of NY, but they weren't hearing me. Suspect they were pointed to EU, which is what I would have done too. Plenty of different calls, think maybe the next running might start and end a bit earlier. It got pretty quiet towards the end, with WJ2O providing the few new ones. Lotsa other contests made it hard on 40 and 160 too...73, Julius
K2ZR (ny) -- The rebirth of the NYQP was terrific! Except for the wee hours of the morning, CW participation was steady. My thanks to mobiles WB2ABD/M & W2PV/M. I'm looking forward to the NYQP in 2010! 73, de Dick
K2AXX (ny) -- Great fun! Had to replace 40m sloper, fix keying circuit, find out that 6m had infinite VSWR (found loose connector outside this morning :-( ) and had to take 3 hours off for family stuff during prime time.
KG2V (ny) -- Low, short wires, but had fun, which is what counts. Bands DIED around 7:30pm
K2DB (ny) -- Wow, What a blast. Better than I even thought it would be. 73 c u next year. Paul
W2RZS () -- Nice job in organizing the first NYQP in many years! 73 ES GUD DX, Bob WB2NVR, for W2RZS
AC3D (tn) -- Thanks, enjoyed the contest, only 42 qso's so not a prize winner but had fun.
KS2D -- A friend told me about the New York Q so party one day prior to the event, I tried my best to learn the logging program ,so is the date or settings are not right I apologize, anyway I had a good time making all of the contacts , it was my first time at this.Thank you, Harry
KG4GVL (fl) -- Ran 1 watt from my SWL-40+(aka ""The KillerWatt"") to my 40m loop strung up around the trees. First bit of cool weather of the year for us, thermostat in the house was all the way down to 68, brrr!
K2SX -- Welcome back. Good to have the NYQP back on. Good turn-out for first time back. Would have been nice to have more mobiles running around giving us something to chase. The amount of time was ok but would have been nice to start a bit earlier and end a bit earlier. Cut into watcxhing the Yankees game but then that went on forever. I’m afraid a number of out-of-state entrants thought I was still in NY. You may find a number of logs with me in some strange county, e.g. SCH, I kept sending “/SC” but some would not listen. 73, Dennis
KC2WI K2LML -- We really enjoyed working this contest. I hope you run it again before a year passes.
NV2A -- Thanks guys for all your work, it was great fun!
PA3ARM -- Hello there. Vy psed this party came to live again. Wait fer better condx hi
VE5BCS -- All contacts were very tought qsb was bad but the test was very enjoyable. I could never pull out 50 contact from that band. Hope to see u next yr and welcome back.
WA2VYA -- Enjoyed your first NY QSO Party. Good activity from the western counties, but could use a boost in the east, along the border of New England and downstate.
